I'm in Athens. Where should I go?

The magnificent Acropolis, visible from almost every part of the city, is a unique site for Athens. This city of temples, built in the 5th century BC, serves as a daily reminder to the Greeks of their heritage and the city’s many transformations.

The cultural and social life of Athens takes place in, around and in centuries-old landmarks, if not thousands of years. The remains of ancient Greece are rare and historically exciting.

At the foot of the Acropolis is the neighborhood of Anafiotika, which is unlike any other neighborhood in Athens, and when you are in it you will feel that you have left the city and are in an authentic Greek village.

The area is central to the city and is bounded by 3 squares – Syntagma Square, Monastiraki Square and Omnia Square. The area is full of restaurants, cafes, shops and bars and is bustling at all hours of the day and night.

Kolonaki is the upscale neighborhood of Athens, where you’ll find high-end shops, galleries, and museums alongside a variety of cafes and patisseries that wouldn’t shame Paris.

For history buffs, there are two other recommended museums in the neighborhood – the Benaki Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art.

Beyond Athens, down the Attica Peninsula, are magnificent ancient cities such as the Temple of Poseidon in So union and the site of the ancient Eleusis, alongside magical beaches, such as those near the historic Marathon. If you prefer not to drive, most of these special places can be reached by public transport.

Athens also has a lot to offer in the culinary world, diverse restaurants offer appetizing Mediterranean cuisine and a variety of shops. Colorful vegetables, juicy meat and delicious cheese are just three ingredients from a long list of varied delicacies prepared in the purest Greek style.

It is also recommended to visit other islands in the Athens area, such as Hydra and the exciting Agistri. This can be done independently (be mindful of ferry opening hours) or book an organized day trip.
